I’ve played many PSP games on my Xiaomi 12t Pro device using the PPSSPP emulator and I can tell you the control experience isn’t all that smooth. I couldn’t get the best gameplay on titles like God of War: Ghost of Sparta and other similar games.

While the touch control feature from the PSP emulator isn’t bad, the experience won’t make sense for starters. However, I was able to find a solution for myself using a game controller.

To be honest, nothing feels better than playing with a gamepad. Especially if you’re just new to installing PSP games, you might want to consider using a standard controller. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the PPSSPP controller setup guide for Android devices.

It’s a straightforward guide and you don’t need any technical skills to make it work. Just make sure you have the perfect gamepad and the latest version of the emulator installed on your Android device.

What You’ll Need:

Before getting the PSP emulator to use a controller, you’ll need to have the following.

  • Wireless Controller (BT 5.0+ version)
  • PPSSPP (Free or Gold)
  • Phone Holder (Optional)

Steps to Setup PPSSPP Controller on Android

As I’ve explained earlier, it’s all an easy process so just follow how it’s being done.

1. The first you need to do is get your wireless controller ready. You can use DualShock controllers or anyone.

2. Active the Bluetooth sensor. For PS4 and PS5 controllers, press and hold the PlayStation Logo till the beam light starts flashing.

3. On your Android device, go to Settings > Bluetooth > Under Available Devices > Select the controller and pair it with your phone. (The beam light will stop flashing once the gamepad has been connected.

4. Launch the PPSSPP emulator and go to Settings.

5. Under Settings > click on Controls > Control Mappings.

6. On the Control Mappings section, click on the Clear All option (this allows you to clear all default mappings)

7. Once the default controls have been cleared, you can now map fresh controls.

8. To assign new controls, click on the + icon near the Dpad Up and assign the exact button on the controller. Do that for each of the options to match all the buttons on your gamepad.

9. Launch any PSP game on the PPSSPP emulator to test the controller.

10. If the controls work fine, then the next thing to do is disable touch controls.

11. In the PPSSPP Settings > Controls > On-Screen Touch Controls > tick to disable it.
